What Livers Do?

* information obtained from the book ” African-American Health by Richard W. Walker, Dr. MD”

Liver cells also called “Hepatocytes” main role is to detoxify our blood.

It produces a host of enzymes (a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction) responsible for metabolizing that which our body naturally produces called endogenous substances as well as that which they body takes from its environment such as medications, foods, water, air and anything absorbed by the skin.

In this process of metabolism; this chemical component existing in each substance are broken down and converted into simple molecules, which are either utilized by the body or eliminated. For the ones that are to be eliminated, the P450 enzyme has to convert them from fat-soluble particles to water-soluble so they can be eliminated through sweat, stool, urine, exhalation, which in the ends leads to the detoxifying of the body.

As your liver ages, the effectiveness of its enzymes begins to decrease. Without the properly functioning P450 enzymes, the process of elimination breaks down and toxins begins to accumulate in your system. The more toxins remaining in your body, the quicker the deterioration of your body’s cell will be.

At the beginning, there will be a relentless process of degeneration; which means cells will grow old and lose their efficiency and effectiveness, which leads to further deterioration of the cells, creating a cycle that can quickly lead to disease.

PSA: the example above just focuses on just one organ system and one set of cells in the organs. So imagine this process occurring throughout all organs systems; in addition, if the deterioration of cells isn’t stopped, disease will follow the declining of the cellular function.
