Defining Macro and Micronutrients
Macronutrients are the calorie-providing nutrients your body requires in large amounts, including proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Micronutrients are required in small amounts and consist of water- and fat-soluble vitamins, macro minerals, and trace elements.
The three categories of calorie-filled macronutrients – proteins, carbohydrates, and fats – are joined by a fourth zero-calorie macronutrient, water, and form the chemical basis for the structure, function, and energy of all life.
Most foods are some combination of two or more macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, water) However, sometimes foods are labeled incorrectly. Some foods don’t even reflect the majority macronutrient – for example, many cuts of meats are majority FAT, but often listed as a protein
